The job interview may stretch on for the allotted hour, but candidates should know this: the recruiter has usually made a gut-reaction decision just 12 minutes into the process.

A survey of 100 Canadian senior executives, released Wednesday, found that most interview staff-level candidates for 60 minutes and management-level candidates for more than an hour-and-a-half, on average.

However, job-seekers should not take the length of the interview as a sign that things went well, according to the poll, conducted for recruitment firm Robert Half Finance & Accounting.

“Executives polled said it takes them just 12 minutes to form an opinion of job seekers,” said Robert Half, which routinely conducts polls on such water-cooler topics.

“The interview begins the moment the job seeker arrives, so applicants need to project enthusiasm and confidence from the start,” said Max Messmer, chairman and chief executive officer of Robert Half International, in a news release announcing the survey results.

“The opening minutes of the conversation often set the tone for the rest of the discussion, making it wise to prepare especially well for the first few interview questions,” Mr. Messner said.

To help job-seekers prepare for their 12 minutes of fame, Robert Half offers the following frequently-asked questions, and tips for making a good first impression:

Q: Can you tell me a little about yourself?

A: Concisely discuss your professional goals and interests as they relate to the job opportunity. Your answer should provide insight into why you are the right fit for the position and for the company.

Q: What do you know about our firm?

A: Research the business beforehand and be prepared to discuss how your skills and experience will help you contribute to its success.

Q: Why do you want to work here?

A: Whether it's the company's values, history of success or reputation in the industry that attracted you, respond in a way that shows you understand the organization's priorities and business objectives.

Q: Why are you looking to leave your current position?

A: Keep your answer focused on the opportunity – for example, a chance to advance your career. Remain positive and avoid disparaging other employers.

Q: What is your most significant professional accomplishment?

A: Cite an achievement that demonstrates your abilities and shows you value results.

the journey that matters in the end." - Ursula LeGuin

Engineer: Well, I’ve attended some conferences in this field. But the most relevant training I’ve had was in computer design. I believe I could integrate that knowledge with my college degree to design a program for your company.

Manager: I see. Did you have anything specific in mind?
Engineer: Well, I notice that you currently provide an on-screen TV Guide. At the moment, it just scrolls the names of the programs in a repeated loop. If you have many channels, you have to wait a long time to find the item you are interested in. I believe I could design a program that makes the guide interactive. Customers could go right to the program they want.

Manager: That’s impressive. How would you make the pay?
Engineer: Tie it in with the pay-per-view services, and perhaps it could be a money-maker.
Manager: I see you have several good ideas. Now, I just have a few questions about your C.V. I notice that there is a five-year gap between your last job and now.

Interview

Manager: I’ve just looked over your resume and I must admit I am quite impressed.
Sales Rep: Thank you. I’ve worked pretty hard to be able to list those accomplishments.

Manager: You’ve got plenty of training and experience. I wonder if you could tell me something about your goals. Where do you see yourself ten years from now?
Rep: To be honest, I don’t plan in that much detail. My goals tend to be general; I define success according to the job at hand. I see myself advancing as I succeed, but I don’t necessarily dwell on the timing of each step.

Manager: interesting! And how do you feel about decision-making? Are you an independent thinker, or do you depend more on your superior for direction?
Rep: That depends a bit on the problem at hand. There are certain situations in which a manager can give a general directive, and expect his employees to know how to take the initiative on the details. I am known for taking the initiative, but I believe I also have the discernment to wait for direction when the situation calls for that.

Manager: Sounds good. Everyone is taking about teams these days. Can you describe your role as a member of a sales team?
Rep: I see myself as an encourager. Of course, sales can be quite competitive and sometimes people in this field have a secret desire for others to fail. In my last job, each representative handled a different region. I developed a system for sharing sales gimmicks that worked. Soon the whole sales team started saving up stories, not just to brag, but to share.

Mr. White: So, tell me : what makes you think we should give you a raise?
Miss Small: I’ve got several good reasons. I’ve been here several years, my work has proven to be good, and I’ve noticed that people in comparable jobs get paid more than I do.

Mr. White: Salaries are confidential, how do you know how much money these "other people" make?
Miss Small: Well, I’ve noticed all the new cars around here, for one thing.

Mr. White: Those are company cars provided to the sales staff for their business trips.
Also, some employees receive sales commissions. So good salesmen will naturally earn more.
Miss Small: That’s understandable. Well, rather than comparing my salary with someone else’s, perhaps we could talk about my job performance. Surely you’ve noticed the extra hours I’ve put in recently? If i were being paid an hourly wage, with the standard time-and-a-half for overtime, I’d be earning much more.

Mr. White: I see your point. However, it might be hard to get a raise approved. Profits were down last quarter, and the whole company is tightening its belt, so anything that affects the annual budget is hard to get approved. But I’ll tell you what I’ll do, I’ll give you a one-time bonus for your recent hard work. And I’ll try to arrange some sort of compensation for any future overtime.
Miss Small: That would be very good of you, Mr. White.

Confidential

Mr. Smith: What are you basing this information on?
