You are right. Usually hotels refer to themselves as xxx+hotel. The word "great" is seldom, if ever, used. Some hotels may call themselves YYY Grand Hotel, but not "great hotel." I believe ther equivalent of 大酒店 is just "hotel."
18. 语言与文化
“言为心声”,这个“心”广义地讲,自然也包括民族文化在内。因此,民族语言势必反映该民族的文化(dulture)。
比如说,日本人练武或比武前,往往先要向对手(包括武艺较差的对手)说:“请手下留情!”但是在日本的英美人从译员嘴里听到了这句话,却以为日本人真幽默 ---在这种场合说这种话,是英美文化所不能想象的。因为从 fair play(费厄泼赖)和 sportsmanship(运动员气概)来说,双方都得堂堂正正地拿出全部本事才是 ---怎么能要求对方“手下留情”呢?
不但如此,按英美文化,比赛的一方(哪怕是比较弱的一方)往往会说:“你还是现在认输算了 ---反正我要羸的”(You'd better give up now. I'm gonna win, after all.),或“瞧你可怜的样子,哪儿是我的对手!”(Poor you, you're no match for me.)。日本人听了这种同日本文化格格不入的话,只能苦笑。
汉语专门有固定的词表示公婆、儿媳、岳母、(女)婿、连襟、妯娌、舅子......,俄语亦同;但英语(以及德语)就没有那样固定的词(非用不可时就得临时造,而且造出来也是啰里啰嗦的);汉语、日语一般要分清“姊”、“妹”,而包括英语在内的许多外语则不问姊妹都一视同仁,合用一个词。如一定要说清楚是姊是妹,就得在表示亦姊亦妹的词(如英语的 sister)前加上表示“长”、“幼”的词才行。这难道同日语和汉语文化长幼观念较深,俄罗斯民族与汉民族(在各词语形成的当时)家庭观念比英语、法语等民族为强等文化背景没有联系吗?
附带说一句:英语不问姊妹都是 sister,如必须明确是姊是妹,就得在 sister 前加上表示“长”的字来译“姐姐”(older sister)、加上“幼”字来译“妹妹”(younger sister)---这是我们的英语教科书中有案可查的。但另一种说法,却是英美(特别是美国)比较多用,而我国英语学习者反而不大熟悉的:big sister ---姐姐;small sister ---妹妹。
可惜,现在问大学一年级生“姐姐”英语怎么说,他(她)们还是同笔者于六七十年前学英语时老师所叮嘱的一样:只能说“elder sister”而不能说“older sister”。其落后也,可见。
